Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development (SMSC)

What is SMSC?

SMSC stands for spiritual, moral, social and cultural. All schools in England must show how well their pupils develop in SMSC.

SMSC at Wilberfoss C of E Primary School means that:

Social development:

  • I can care about myself and other people

  • I can work with and respect other people

Moral development:

  • I can choose between what is right and wrong

  • I can understand the consequences of my choices and actions

Spiritual development:

  • I understand I am a unique and special person, who is aware of my own own emotions and feelings

  • I have empathy, concern and compassion for others

  • I can see awe and wonder in the physical and creative world

  • I can ask 'big' questions about life, the world and God

Cultural development:

  • I can be proud of who I am and where I come from

  • I can learn about and respect other peoples’ cultures

We believe strongly that all adults within the school community have a responsibility for the spiritual development of themselves and the children they support. Every school day presents opportunities for enhancing the spiritual wellbeing of our children through the general ethos of the school, the daily act of collective worship and the whole curriculum. Within spirituality lies the heart of all religious expression and belief. Please take a look at our spirituality policy below.
